in Parenting

From preschool home instruction to parent ambassador training, our education programs help families at all stages of parenting. With your help, we can provide resources to mothers and families to help them succeed in Canada.

Why Parent Engagement is Important

Parent engagement helps children and students fulfill their potential. Research shows that parent involvement in a child’s education will result in increased achievement at school.

Parents being involved in their child’s education will result in better attendance, more confidence and the greater possibility of them graduating.

The Working Women Community Centre works hard every day to develop and provide tools to parents to engage with their child to increase their achievement at school.

On Your Mark

On Your Mark (OYM) provides free one-on-one tutoring for students who are struggling in school, helping them gain the skills and confidence needed to succeed. OYM is the largest volunteer tutoring program in Toronto specializing in academic support for Spanish and Portuguese speaking students and is the only tutoring program helping students in grades 1 - 12. Tutors also mentor students, helping them explore post-secondary and career options.

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters

HIPPY is a 30-week home-based early education program that recognizes a mother’s role as their child’s first and best teacher. Through HIPPY, mothers learn simple, daily activities to practice with their preschool children, preparing them for academic success by building their reading, language, math and science skills.

Parent Ambassador Program

The Parent Ambassador Program invites parents & caregivers to critically reflect on their children’s schooling experiences, providing tools and accessible language to navigate and identify racial inequities in the education system. Parents and/or caregivers complete a 7-week curriculum that builds leadership skills and understanding of the education system with topics including school governance, parental engagement, special education, equity and social justice. Participants are mentored by previous graduates of the program who share lived experiences.
